Strategic Communications Specialist
Job Description
We are seeking a Strategic Communications Specialist to lead state-level media relations in support of legislative and grassroots efforts. This role involves pitching and placing compelling stories in local and regional media, building strong relationships with reporters, editors, and producers. Responsibilities include drafting and distributing press releases, op-eds, talking points, advisories, and statements tailored to state and regional audiences. The ideal candidate will shape state-level messaging aligned with the national narrative, secure press coverage of organizational milestones, monitor state media coverage, and support coordinated communications efforts across various channels. Ensuring alignment with organizational values and providing continuity for communications when the CCO is unavailable are also key aspects of this position.
Qualifications
1. 5-8 years of experience in communications, public relations, political campaigns, journalism, or related fields. 2. Demonstrated media relations experience, including pitching and placing stories in state or regional media outlets. 3. Exceptional writing and editing skills across formats. 4. Strong editorial and political instincts, with the ability to assess risk, timing, and tone in fast-moving media environments. 5. Demonstrated success shaping and targeting messages for diverse, cross-partisan audiences. 6. Experience managing media relations in a political, advocacy, or legislative context. 7. Strong commitment to cross-partisan engagement and respect for differing viewpoints. 8. Ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail. 9. Collaborative, team-oriented approach. 10. Experience working effectively with remote teams. 11. Experience working with or in state legislatures and a solid understanding of the legislative process (strongly preferred). 12. Established relationships with state-level political or policy reporters.
