Staff Attorney, Senior Attorney
Job Description
We are seeking a Staff Attorney or Senior Attorney to support California's civil legal aid providers through technical assistance, training, and advocacy for youth impacted by systems and their families. This role involves supporting community advocates, organizers, and directly-impacted young people to address the needs of systems-impacted children and young adults, with a focus on ensuring opportunities to live in the community with family and appropriate supports. The attorney will conduct advocacy at local, state, and systems levels on issues affecting systems-impacted youth, including technology, mental health services, and related priorities. This includes educating stakeholders on legal and policy opportunities, collaborating across teams, and utilizing tools like litigation, legislation, and media to improve outcomes for students impacted by foster care and juvenile justice systems.
Qualifications
1. A minimum of one year of post-law school experience as a practicing attorney 2. Experience using a variety of advocacy strategies, such as litigation, direct service, and/or policy advocacy 3. Current active bar license or willingness to obtain California licensure 4. Demonstrated ability as an advocate in juvenile justice, foster care, education, health, youth homelessness, or a closely-related field 5. Substantive experience and knowledge of civil legal practices impacting systems-involved youth 6. Interest in and ability to engage with emerging issues related to technology, digital systems, data use, and artificial intelligence as they affect systems-impacted youth 7. Creativity and thoughtfulness in challenging the status quo 8. Ability to think strategically and analytically and to identify policy issues 9. Excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills 10. Experience and ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse groups of people 11. Deep commitment to elevating the voices of young people impacted by the foster care and juvenile justice systems 12. Capacity to take initiative on identified goals, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, work independently, and meet deadlines 13. Flexibility and adaptability in response to changing priorities and circumstances 14. Ability to work individually and collaborate effectively with others in a fully remote environment 15. Ability to travel regularly for a variety of meetings, events, and other activities
