Principal Software Engineer – Simulation, Digital Twin Architect
Job Description
GM is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architecture for its manufacturing Digital Twin & Simulation platform. This role involves owning the end-to-end architecture, defining enterprise reference architectures and APIs, architecting scalable data schemas, and designing distributed simulation architectures. The ideal candidate will mentor engineers and influence technical direction across GM to achieve better performance. Responsibilities include: * Owning the end-to-end architecture for GM’s manufacturing Digital Twin & Simulation stack. * Defining and maintaining enterprise reference architectures, APIs, and data contracts. * Architecting scalable data schemas and pipelines for managing plant and floor data. * Designing modular, distributed simulation architectures across cloud and on-prem environments. * Leading cross-functional, multi-team initiatives to align teams and vendors. * Serving as a principal technical voice for Digital Twin & Simulation, mentoring engineers.
Qualifications
Key requirements for the Principal Software Engineer role include: 1. A Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. 2. 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a focus on architecture or technical leadership. 3. Deep experience with 3D or manufacturing simulation environments like Unity or Unreal Engine. 4. Proven track record integrating systems across PLM/CAD, MES/production, PLC/controls, and data/analytics platforms. 5. Strong programming skills in C++, C#, Python, or similar languages. 6. Experience with cloud and on-prem environments for high-scale simulation workloads. 7. Familiarity with manufacturing and industrial automation is advantageous. 8. Knowledge of Teamcenter, Siemens Technomatix Process Simulate, or similar tools. 9. Experience with SiL/HiL setups, scenario-based testing, and CI/CD-integrated simulation workflows. 10. Understanding of cybersecurity and data governance for connected factory systems.
