Lead Compliance Counsel

Job Description

Assume leadership in designing, building, and continuously refining scalable compliance programs. These programs should encompass trade sanctions, export controls (e.g., EAR, OFAC, ITAR), anti-bribery and anti-corruption measures (e.g., FCPA), KYC/KYB protocols, government contracting standards, and strategies for managing employee conflicts of interest, alongside other critical regulatory areas. This includes developing robust risk-based due diligence processes, screening protocols, and ongoing monitoring procedures. Offer expertise and strategic advice to cross-functional business teams, guiding them on compliance risks linked to global business activities, commercial expansions, and the introduction of new products. Spearhead enterprise-wide compliance risk assessments and audits to pinpoint, assess, and mitigate compliance risks, converting findings into actionable remediation plans. Formulate, update, and implement compliance-related policies, procedures, and internal controls across diverse jurisdictions. Develop and execute training programs and communication strategies to cultivate a strong culture of compliance. Contribute to the review and negotiation of compliance provisions in commercial and vendor contracts, complete compliance questionnaires and certifications, and seek out opportunities to streamline and standardize contracting and diligence processes for improved efficiency. Keep abreast of and analyze changes in the global regulatory environment—including U.S. and international sanctions regimes, anti-corruption laws, and other relevant frameworks—and oversee regulatory outreach, customer-facing compliance communications, and responses to third-party due diligence requests and vendor compliance certifications.

Qualifications

1. Hold a J.D. from an accredited law school with active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. 2. Possess 8+ years of relevant compliance, regulatory, or legal experience, demonstrating significant responsibility in building and managing compliance programs (with a preference for at least three years in a tech company). 3. Demonstrate experience with compliance technology tools, including AI, automated screening systems, and compliance management platforms. 4. Exhibit strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple workstreams, and drive initiatives to completion in a fast-paced setting. 5. Have a collaborative, partnership-oriented working style, characterized by integrity, sound judgment, strategic thinking, and a solutions-oriented mindset, alongside excellent written and verbal communication skills to distill complex regulatory concepts for non-legal audiences. 6. Show adaptability and willingness to take on a variety of projects on a lean team in a rapidly scaling company.
