Engineering Manager – Tax Platform
Job Description
Take charge of the technical vision for Tax Engineering, steering the architecture and execution for precise cost basis tracking, gain/loss calculations, automated withholding, and robust reporting infrastructure essential for Coinbase's tax compliance at scale. Lead and nurture a team of 12 skilled engineers, providing mentorship to maximize their impact, champion career growth, and cultivate a culture of technical innovation and operational excellence. Spearhead the creation of essential tax components for emerging products as Coinbase ventures into equities, margin trading, options, and beyond, ensuring the architecture is inherently adaptable and all product launches benefit from foundational tax infrastructure from the outset. Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and trading teams to convert intricate tax and regulatory demands into adaptable technical solutions. Manage the delivery of vital systems such as 1099-B and 1099-DA broker reporting pipelines, automated withholding deductions, and seamless clearing integrations with Apex, prioritizing unwavering accuracy and reliability. Enhance engineering processes and methodologies to facilitate swift, top-tier execution in an environment where precision is critical, including refining testing protocols, data validation techniques, and promoting operational efficiency. Expand the team by actively engaging with Talent Acquisition to pinpoint, attract, and onboard exceptional engineering talent who thrive in tackling complex systems with significant real-world financial implications.
Qualifications
1. Possess 7+ years of experience in software engineering, demonstrating deep expertise in building and scaling distributed systems. 2. Possess 2+ years of engineering management experience, including coaching engineers, managing performance, and building high-performing teams. 3. Demonstrate technical depth equivalent to a Staff Engineer, having hands-on experience prior to management, with the ability to dive deep into architecture, code, and technical decisions. 4. Exhibit proven experience in building data-intensive systems where accuracy, auditability, and scale are critical, particularly in financial systems, compliance infrastructure, or similar domains. 5. Exhibit a strong understanding of distributed systems architecture, data pipelines, and the trade-offs involved in building reliable infrastructure that processes high-volume, high-stakes transactions. 6. Exhibit experience partnering cross-functionally with Product, Legal, Compliance, or Finance teams to translate complex requirements into technical solutions. 7. Thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments where new products and regulatory requirements continuously expand the problem space. 8. Demonstrate the ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots in daily workflows, continuously learn as tools evolve, and apply human-in-the-loop practices to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in efficiency, cost, and quality. 9. Nice to haves include experience with tax systems, cost basis engines, 1099 reporting, or financial compliance infrastructure.
