Engineering Manager – Partners
Job Description
As an Engineering Manager, you will: Lead a team of engineers, guiding software architecture and taking responsibility for delivery, quality, and technical direction. Run an efficient development process, ensuring sprint health, delivery cadence, incident response, and sustainable on-call rotations to prevent burnout. Develop engineers through feedback, performance reviews, and challenging assignments that foster growth. Collaborate with product teams to scope initiatives, identify risks, and prioritize deliverables, providing clear communication regarding capacity constraints. Maintain technical oversight to ask pertinent questions, identify risks early, and contribute meaningfully to design discussions without impeding progress. Define key metrics for your team's systems to explain performance, detect variances, and drive improvements proactively. Address difficult conversations, such as performance issues, interpersonal conflicts, or delivery risks, before they escalate into larger problems.
Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you should have: 1. A background as a software engineer with hands-on experience in building and shipping production systems. 2. Experience managing a team of engineers and a track record of building effective development processes and fostering individual growth. 3. Technical credibility to evaluate design decisions, challenge assumptions, and gain the respect of engineers without needing to be the most technical person. 4. Comfort with operational ownership, including on-call culture, incident management, and maintaining system health. 5. Clear and direct communication skills with stakeholders and leadership, including the ability to escalate issues when necessary. 6. The ability to operate with autonomy, knowing when to seek guidance.
